So I’m going to tell about this week so far, mostly for you mom.
We had our first test, icky. Now I’m supposed to be doing part two which is two short essays, and I need to do three worksheets and study for a grammar test on Tuesday. Which I’m actually obsessed with grammar, it’s only frustrating here because our teacher speaks almost no english, therefore sometimes she can not fully explain things because she doesn’t know how it would work in english. Also she is unorganized. She gives about 8 photocopied sheets out a day, but really only spends time explaining about one, leaving us confused and with a solid amount of homework. As long as I end up with an A though, I don’t really care. 430 has been horrible though. We literally just walk around for 2-3 hours in the hott hott hott weather and she explains and repeats things over and over. Those are the better days though. When we are stuck in class for two hours looking at powerpoints, I die. I wrote my friend a poem and made a list of all the people here and described them while she was talking.
Anyway that’s the boring stuff.
We went out Wednesday to a bar because we were supposed to have the opportunity to chat with native Segovians who wanted to improve their english. However, they all had tests Thursday so it ended up just being our group. We stayed for a little, had some tapas, I won pool (made two balls in what whattt) and then I went to dinner with three boys. There are ten boys and 17 girls in the program, and I end up with just boys. As my friend said good to see things aren’t too different here than in Phoenix haha. We ended up talking about a lot of things at dinner though. Like our greatest insecurities and fears. It’s weird to think that these people are going to learn so much about me this summer and then I probably won’t talk to them much after.
Thursday night was crazy. There are a lot of festivities here in Segovia the end of June and we got to witness a few. We met at the aqueduct around 1030 and got to see ribbon dancers in the air which was neat. Then we walked over to the plaza mayor for the bonfire where you are supposed to throw in things you want to figuratively and literally burn in the flames in your life. There were so many people in the streets, I wasn’t aware Segovia had that many people. I guess around 60,000 people live here though, craziness. There was a concert after but we were more interested in the bars.
We met at least two other groups of students studying here! One group from the University of Dayton, and the other was composed of students from various schools. I met another Theta from Oregon State who knew some of my friends in Theta at UA. Such a small world sometimes. Hopefully we can go out with them more, because I do love my group but it’s fun to meet others (that i can communicate with). I decided to wear wedges out and I’m realizing this is such a dumb idea. Then on the walk home I decided it was a great idea to take them off. This was two days ago my feet are still black. gross. So yeah, I’m probably still going to wear wedges out though hahahah.
Then yesterday (no idea how I got up after 2.5 hours of sleep) we walked to La Granja which is a small pretty city outside of Segovia. We thought it was a 3 mile walk, nope around 6. It was really hot and we almost died. Once we got there though it was pretty and we had a HUGE lunch. Menu del día is a really common thing here that I have been desperately trying to avoid because it is so much food, but I finally gave in. It is two plates that you get to choose between a few options (some of the meat scares me so i chose a baked potato, then eggs, sausage, and potatoes) and then dessert (i had rice pudding, SO good) and bread and wine or water to drink (DEF water after the night). Then we walked around and saw the palaces, gardens, and swans!
When we returned home I passed out. Woke up for dinner only which was tortilla espanola (more potatoes….) and now I can’t even look at a potato without wanting to vomit. So yeah just trying to finish my homework now and then we will most likely go out tonight :)
